Many people think that the world of mechanical watches is a daunting and scary place.
They think that the prices are always high and that the watches are fragile.
Well young Padawan, let me introduce you to the world of Seiko 5.
This is Seiko’s entry level mechanical watch range. When you search for reviews of these watches, you often encounter quotes like this: “Probably the best value for money mechanical watch in the world”
Almost anyone can afford them and they have great build quality that put watches 5 times their price to shame.
The first Seiko 5 came out in 1963. Today there are literally dozens and dozens of models.
You can find anything from dress watches to dive watches and even military watches in the range.
Most of them have see-through casebacks so you can admire the movement. Everyone loves a see-through caseback….right?
Here are 4 of my favourite models:
Seiko 5 “Sea Urchin” SNZF17 and SNZF15

The Sea Urchin is a great entry-level dive watch and has been featured on Tick Talk before. http://ticktalk.co.za/2016/09/27/seiko-divers/
It has a 41mm case which is a nice size for most people.
You can find them online for under $150
Seiko 5 SNKL23

This 38mm dress watch looks WAY more expensive than it’s price of about $80.
It was featured on Hodinkee. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-seventy-five-dollar-watch-that-looks-like-a-million-bucks
Seiko 5 SNK809

This is probably the most iconic Seiko 5.
You can find one of these for less than $50 and they are available in many different colours. The case size is 37mm
Seiko 5 SNZH53

The SNZH53 has a really gorgeous blue dial and bezel.
Its 41mm in size and can be found for under $150
